MUSCAT, OMAN / RankWire.AI / – Oman’s electricity generation saw a 4.3% year-on-year increase during the first eight months of 2026. The total electricity produced reached 37,481.8 gigawatt-hours, up from 35,935.3 GWh in the same period of 2025. This rise equates to roughly 1,546.5 GWh. Data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information indicated positive trends in several governorates. In August alone, production was 5,743.9 GWh, compared to 5,676.9 GWh in July. Consequently, national electricity output remained above the 2025 figures.

Muscat experienced the most substantial increase in overall electricity generation, with output surging by 204.8% compared to the previous year. Al Dakhiliyah also saw notable growth of 44.1%, while Al Wusta’s production grew by 8.4%. Additionally, North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah each saw increases of 5.5%. Dhofar’s output rose by 4.6% during the same period. The data reveals regional disparities in electricity growth, with several governorates recording higher output during this timeframe.
During the first eight months, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah displayed a contrasting trend, with combined electricity production decreasing by 16.4% compared to the same period in 2025. Musandam produced 376.0 GWh, maintaining a nearly unchanged output from the previous year. Overall, regional data show an upward trend in most areas covered by the national statistics. Through August, Oman’s total electricity generation remained higher than the previous year. These figures encompass the output from January through August 2026.
Electricity Production Shows Overall Growth Across Oman
Net electricity output also experienced an increase over the January to August span. It grew by 4.6%, reaching 36,463.9 GWh from 34,871.8 GWh recorded a year earlier. This measurement accounts for purchases made by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and the Rural Areas Electricity Company. Muscat led the way with a net production increase of 204.4%. Al Dakhiliyah saw a rise of 44.2%, while Al Wusta and Dhofar grew by 9.1% and 7.6%, respectively. The total national net increase was approximately 1,592.1 GWh.
North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah combined for a 5.4% rise in net electricity output. Conversely, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced a decline of 16.6%. Musandam’s net production was 368.0 GWh, with its annual change rate remaining at 0.0%. Overall, Oman’s net electricity generation stayed above the comparable figures from 2025. The regional variations mostly reflected the changes observed in total electricity output, with several governorates recording increases during this period.
Water Production Declines During the First Eight Months of 2026
Water output in Oman decreased over the same eight-month period. Total volume fell by 3.5%, reaching 330.65 million cubic metres from approximately 342.71 million the previous year. Muscat’s water production declined by 6.2%, totaling around 128.07 million cubic metres, down from about 136.57 million during the same period of 2025. Other governorates experienced a 3.4% decrease, producing roughly 149.90 million cubic metres, compared to 155.19 million cubic metres a year earlier.
Dhofar bucked the national trend, recording an increase in water production. Output reached approximately 52.68 million cubic metres, representing a 3.4% rise from roughly 50.94 million a year earlier. The latest figures demonstrate that electricity and water figures are moving in different directions across Oman through August 2026. While electricity output increased both in total and net terms, water production overall declined despite Dhofar’s growth. The National Centre for Statistics and Information classifies these figures as preliminary.
