The June event accumulated around 16,700 area-degree days, while the late July episode ranged between 22,700 and 25,000. The previous Austrian benchmark originated from a 24-day heatwave in July and August 2013, which registered roughly 22,100 area-degree days across land areas under 1,500 meters elevation.
The early summer’s extreme heat coincided with a sharp increase in heat-related fatalities. The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety reported 395 such deaths in June 2026, marking the highest June figure since the agency began tracking this data. Heat-related mortality indicates deaths exceeding normal expectations during periods of extreme temperatures and does not necessarily mean heat was the sole cause listed on death certificates.
